Mau Te Rongo Navigators

Our new safety has the goal of improving security and strengthening community ties. This initiative was introduced in response to rising concerns about safety at transport hubs, especially the safety of our rangatahi.

In response to local concerns, we initiated our Mau Te Rongo Navigators. Our Mau Te Rongo Navigators who are currently a team of five safety officers, are a dedicated team that supports peacebuilding, conflict resolution and social connection. They are trained to respond to ensure rangatahi safety and the general community traveling on public transport, patrolling the CBD and local shopping centres in Porirua East with a restorative, culturally grounded lens.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker has expressed her support for our initiative, emphasising its importance in making the community feel safe and connected, and has highlighted their positive impact. β€œThe Mau Te Rongo navigators are on hand to engage, assist, or just have a chat with anyone who needs assistance. This is a really positive step.” says Mayor Baker.

The Mau Te Rongo Navigators will work closely with community police patrols to provide extra visibility and reassurance to the public. They will also engage with public transport users, build connections with support agencies, and offer insights into emerging risks and challenges.

We have additionally be re-engaging Pacific families of students with chronic non-attendance back into education, with education and attendance support.
